What is a catio?

Basically, it's an amalgamation of the words cat and patio ('ca't pa'tio'), or a patio for cats. As human, we enjoy our outdoor spaces to the fullest, be that a patio or a deck, so why shouldn't our furry family members enjoy these types of spaces as well.

As any cat owner would attest, most cats want to be outside and will try to get there by any means possible. Unfortunately, unlike the old song, the cat doesn't always come back the very next day, sometimes they don't return at all.

At the Custom Catio Co. our main goal is to allow cats the freedom to enjoy most of what the outdoors has to offer without compromising their safety. Fresh air, stimulating sights, sounds and smells, direct exposure to various types of weather, indoor cats can experience all of this without fear of them running away, getting attacked by predators or other domestic animals, or getting killed by any number of means that the great outdoors presents.

A catio will accomodate a cat's curiosity of the outdoors as well as keep their own natural predatory instincts in check. In Canada, a 2025 study estimated that 19 to 197 million birds (with a median estimate of 60 million) are killed anually by domestic cats. Although feral cats can shoulder the blame for most bird deaths (around 69%), owned cats, that are freely allowed outdoors, contribute significantly to this ecological impact. Not to mention uncontrolled reproduction in cats that are not spayed or neutered can easily get out of control in some areas.
